GMO’s Are Us—Us Being the Peasants

Today in our country our corporate and government elite dine on safe, organic food while the masses, those very people who are supposedly represented and protected by our government, are poisoned by hidden genetically modified organisms, pesticides and dangerous contaminants. The presidential family demands organic food in their kitchen, yet behind closed doors, shake hands with Monsanto.  While First Lady Michelle Obama digs up the White House lawn to plant an organic garden, her husband promotes a GMO agenda within his administration. “You know, in my household, over the last year we have just shifted to organic,” she said in a New Yorker interview during Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. But then take a look at Obama’s laundry-list of presidential appointed positions with the biotech giant known as Monsanto;  USDA head Roger Beachy, a former director at Monsanto, FDA food safety czar Michael Taylor, one-time vice president for public policy at Monsanto and Commissioner of the USDA Tom Vilsack who created the Governors’ Biotechnology Partnership.

Access to clean, organic and healthy food remains out of reach for the masses. One reason is the poor and middle class feel they cannot afford it.  The second reason is deceptive labeling, marketing and the selling out of the “purported” experts.   For years Dr. Oz urged Americans to eat organic.  He aggressively promoted the importance of organic eating and often stated he chose organic food whenever possible. Now it seems he has sold out to big agriculture. He now declares organic foods are for the elitist, snooty and are not any better than conventional foods.  His article in Time Magazine most recent issue implies that organic food is only for “the 1%,” blurring his message with the Occupy movement which vilified the “1%” and insisted the People represent the “99%.” Yet the Occupy movement activists are the very same people who fight against Monsanto, GMOs, synthetic pesticides, corporate agriculture and all the conventional processed foods he promoted in his article.  His metaphor is backwards. The 1% are the evil corporations pushing poisons and GMOs. The 99% are the people who want clean food. He has sold his soul to the criminally run food giants.  Interestingly, no where in his article does he state he no longer eats organic.

Access to clean healthy food should not be considered a luxury, it simply should be the existing state of our food instead of this poison garbage labeled as food.  As recent as the 1980, there was virtually no genetical altered food on the market.  Present day estimates are now over 80% of our food is genetically modified. A genetically modified organism is an organism who’s genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. There is an abundance of research demonstrating the altered genetics of the plant also alter our genetics. Hamsters fed with GM wheat and soy were unable to have offspring and suffered a high mortality rate.  In a test conducted to determine the safety of GM tomatoes, some animal subjects died within a few weeks after consuming GM tomatoes. Mice fed with GM corn were discovered to have smaller offspring,  fertility problems and massive mammary tumors.  Wake up call here!  Look at the relationship in the increase of disease particularly mammary cancer and make the obvious connection.  And beware much of our food for sale at our beloved farmers markets are now grown with genetically modified seeds.   Do you ever wonder why our tomatoes and corn  appear so  perfect now as compared to twenty years ago?

Monsanto and its cronies spent near 50 million dollars to defeat this bill in one state.
With the passing of election day 2012, massive awareness was spread throughout the country thanks to the California GMO labeling bill known as Proposition 37.  This grassroots bill narrowly failed on a California referendum due to the many dirty tactics employed by the ‘No on 37′ campaign such as misleading ads with shots of Stanford implying Stanford was against proposition 37.   Although the misleading ads were eventually pressured to be removed from the mainstream media, the lies were planted.  

Back in 2007 during his campaign tour, Obama addressed the serious issue of GMOs with a promise that he would immediately ‘let folks know’ whether or not they are consuming GMOs through proper labeling. You can hear the statement yourself in this 17s video:

It seems highly unlikely Obama will keep his promise. Under President Obama, 10 new GM crops have been approved for ‘safe consumption.’  Yet Romney’s GMO polices would have even been more tragic.

My husband’s and my combined income now positions us in the lower middle class. Personally I would stop paying my real estate taxes (criminally egregious amount) before I would cave to eating a steady diet of corporate feed lot, big agriculture, GMO, pesticide, hormone and antibiotic laden food.  One thing I can and will do is protect my health.   

A historical version in my amateur and inept high school history book cited Queen Marie Antoinette of France saying “let them in cake” in response to the peasants complaining there was inadequate food for them. The american masses have now become the  new peasants.
