President Obama’s advisory group set a goal to prevent and effectively treat alzheimers by the year 2025. This announcement last week officially launched the National War on Alzheimer’s. My first thought, Great another war. Let’s see, the war on poverty, the war on cancer, the war on obesity, war on drugs. How victorious have we been? So called progress ends up being the spin on success. There is no win here for you or I. To a great extent, corporations are the only winners. And this one is going to be a windfall for the pharmaceutical companies.
The first thing the committee claims they need to do is study Alzheimer’s. What could they possibly study that has not already been studied. One group of published research they won’t look at is the hundreds of ‘alternative’ abstracts that demonstrate effective treatments of compounds found in plants. Compounds that reduce inflammation, scavenge free radicals, modify the activation or silencing of certain genes, repair DNA, effect glucose uptake, maintain function of neurotransmitters and cellular processes. They certainly won’t study the toxic side effects of medications, pesticides, GMO’s or heavy metals. There may be a quick shout out for the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, even though the benefits are enormous.
2025 will come. Billions will have been spent. A young version of NBC health correspondent, Bob Bazel, will give us a low down on the progress on the War on Alzheimer’s, while the millions with AD continues to climb.
